Why Book the Nine Arch Bridge Experience
The Nine Arch Bridge sits between Ella and Demodara stations, about 170 kilometres from Galle on Sri Lanka’s upcountry railway line. British engineers finished it in 1919 without using structural steel, because the steel earmarked for the project was redirected to World War I. What remains is nine stone-and-cement arches, 91 metres long and 24 metres high, still carrying trains around a nine-degree curve through tea country.
This private day trip covers the long drive up from Galle, time at the bridge to watch a train cross, and a walk back through tea plantations into Ella town. Wear comfortable walking shoes for the 30-minute walk to the bridge, bring sun protection, and pack a bottle of water. The drive is long, so we build in a couple of short rest stops on the way up.
